Waffle Makers Past and Present
72Introduction to Waffles and Waffle Makers
Waffles are similar to a fluffy pancake or a type of bread made from a
batter. The batter is poured into a waffle maker and cooked. Most
waffles are covered with a crosshatched grid that produces the unique
appearance of these menu items.
During the 14th century waffles were being enjoyed by people but the
bread was cooked in special molds that might include a crosshatched
design. However most of the waffle irons used during this time would
feature a coat of arms or a printed inscription. The cooks would bake
the waffles over an open fire.
Different Types of Waffles and Waffle Makers
In the late 1800s the first hinged American waffle iron was patented.
The waffle makers that are available today still rely heavily on this
particular concept. These small appliances have two metal plates with a
hinged design that is similar to a clam shell. The batter is poured
onto one of the metal plates and then the appliance is closed and the
bread cooks on both sides at the same time.
The earlier versions of the waffle irons have long wooden handles that
are attached and can be used on a stovetop or over a fire. Most modern
waffle irons are electric appliances that sit on the counter of your
kitchen. These are easy, safe to use and come in many different styles
including commercial grade, family size and individual sized models.
Some of the American waffle makers can cook waffles that are thin or
thick, but the Belgian waffle irons are designed to create thicker
waffles.
American style waffles are created from recipes that use baking powder
as the leavening agent. These are most commonly eaten for breakfast or
brunch. The taste of an American waffle is slightly sweet and is
usually served with a topping of butter, syrup or fresh fruit. Many
people have begun to top the waffle other items including fried
chicken, ice cream and whipped cream.
Belgian, or Brussels, waffles are made with yeast and they are lighter
and more delicate than many other varieties. The Liege waffle is made
with yeast and sugar and is a very popular snack in Europe. In China
you can find grid cakes which are also known as Hong Kong style
waffles. Other varieties of waffles include the Dutch Stroopwafels and
Scandinavian.
